“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
-Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail
This morning I honestly didn’t know what to say after this weekend. Not just this weekend or the last six days but the last year, decade and history of our country.
I opened my daily mom’s prayer book and found what to say. Today, June 1st, is National Say Something Nice Day. Unsurprisingly, it originated in Charleston, SC as a way to lift others up and not put them down.
Of course we need to do more than just this. We need to listen, to have open discussions, read news based on facts, and get to the voting booths on June 9th and in November to work to dismantle some of the racism.
We don’t have to open our eyes all the way to see that the world can be full of bigotry and hate. Saying something nice and being a person who uplifts those around them is an easy place for anyone to start. Who knows what can be achieved and the benefits are endless.
